Ibn Umar’s opinion on marrying Ahl Kitab
Narrated Nafi’:
Whenever Ibn ‘Umar was asked about marrying a Christian lady or a Jewess, he would say: “Allah has made it unlawful for the believers to marry ladies who ascribe partners in worship to Allah, and I do not know of a greater thing, as regards to ascribing partners in worship, etc. to Allah, than that a lady should say that jesus is her Lord although he is just one of Allah’s slaves.”

Assalamu `Alaikum,
Jazakum Allahu khyran for all these reminders. Can someone please reconcile between this narration and the permissibility for men to marry from the people of book in Islam? (i.e. Christians and Jews).

Salaam Alaikum Alaa.
I think the key is that this is Ibn Umar’s opinion. I believe Sh. Waleed discussed this in FOL that Ibn Umar had the opinion that you can’t marry ahl kitab and I think the scholars classified this opinion as weird/no basis.
I should check bukhari to see what his chapter title was for this hadith. As we know Sahih Bukhari is a book of fiqh. I wonder if Bukhari also held this opinion?
